He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
If you knew you were going to die, what would you do? How would you spend the last few hours, the last couple of days? Many times, people would say things like “I would spend more time with my family, my loved ones”, “I would do something daring”, “I would try to cross things off my bucket list”. I’m sure you could think of other things. So many things’ people could think to do if they knew.
Jesus knew. Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to Him. He knew the day, the hour. Yet in His final few hours before He was betrayed by Judas, Jesus did not do anything for Himself. Jesus went to Gethsemane and prayed to His heavenly Father. Jesus didn’t ask to be spared, not really. He asked if He really had to go through this but He knew He did. He said “not as I will, but as You will”. Jesus accepted what was going to happen to Him. Jesus Prayed.
We should all spend time over the next few days in deep meditation about the events that transpired all those many centuries ago. Think about what Jesus did for us all. Then pray. Pray for forgiveness. Pray for the Holy Spirit to work on our hearts that we might learn and walk with God. Pray for thanksgiving. Thanks be to God for the wonderful gift of salvation that God has given us. That Jesus did for us. Praise God for his mercy and love.
