Value

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Matthew 6:26 ESV

A devotion for July 9th through the 15th

I’ve been thinking lately about our value.   Our value to each other and our value to God.  Let me give you a bit of the backstory as to why this has crossed my mind.

My uncle passed away over a year and a half ago.  I was devastated as I don’t have a lot of family left and he was the last of my mom’s siblings.  He had no spouse, had never been married, and no children.  All he had was his nieces and nephews.  There were 4 children from my aunt and then me and my sister.  My sister passed away about a year before my uncle.  My cousins had been dealing with a lot as they had lost both their parents the year before, so it left me to handle my uncle’s affairs.  I started gathering information and when I saw an accidental death insurance policy, I called to file a claim on his behalf.  After that I turned everything over to a lawyer because he lived in a different state than me.  No one else lived there.  So, an estate attorney took over his estate.

Earlier this year I found out information was needed for the claim so turned it all over to the lawyer.  They had evidently missed this, so it was a good thing I had filed the claim.  They took care of it and then last week I received an email from them letting me know they had received a check for the estate for just a bit over $20,000.  This really hit me and got me thinking.  My uncle’s life and death had been reduced to a check for $20,000.

For me, my uncle’s life was priceless.  I don’t care about that check, or any other money involved from his estate.  I would much rather have my uncle back.  But I keep turning it over in my head about our value.  We are all worth so much more than that.  We are worth more than any amount of money.  You see, God see’s us as extremely valuable.  So valuable that He left His throne, came down as Jesus, and died on a cross for our sins.  The king of kings thinks we are so valuable that He did that for us.

So, if you are not feeling like you are worth much remember, to Him you were worth His blood.  He paid the ultimate price, which means we are more valuable than anything found on this earth.  We are priceless.  We are valuable to Him.
