Uncomfortable Shoes

A devotional for July 3rd through the 9th

Have you ever put on a pair of shoes and thought “geez, these are really uncomfortable”?  What if the shoes were the right size, width, and had all the right support in them?  What if you discovered it wasn’t the shoes at all, but your own feet!  It happens more than you think.

We often go around wearing shoes that are the perfect size for us, but our feet hurt anyway.  Often, we blame the shoes.  There must be something wrong with them.  It couldn’t possibly be our feet.  It must be the shoes.  We go out and buy another pair, only to say they are uncomfortable too.  Until one day, we admit to ourselves that it isn’t the shoes, it’s our feet and we need to do something about it.

I was thinking about this the other day, and it reminded me of how we are with the Bible.  We read it, study it, hear about what it says, whatever the case may be, and it makes us uncomfortable.  We decide that it’s the Bible that has a problem, not us.  It’s flawed, it must be.  It doesn’t fit us.  It’s confining, binding, and just no fun.  It just doesn’t fit us right, so we step away from it and go about our lives looking for what doesn’t make us uncomfortable.

The truth is, if we look at ourselves closer, we will see the reason we feel uncomfortable reading God’s word is because it’s right, and we are wrong.  It’s easy to look at someone else and say they are doing wrong.  It’s easy to say the Bible is stifling, outdated, and just doesn’t fit anymore.  But upon closer inspection, deeply looking at ourselves, we can see where it’s inside of us where things need to change.

God’s word gives us direction.  All we need to do is talk to Him, ask Him to cleanse us.  Once we recognize why we are uncomfortable, we need to do something about it.  We need to accept Him and have faith that He and His plan is a perfect fit.
