Trenches

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12 NKJV

A devotional for September 29th through October 7th

Our recent Women’s Retreat for our conference was called “Hope in the Trenches”.  Everything presented spoke to so many of us, to our hearts. There were things each of us took away from all the presentations and discussions. I am going to talk about some of mine.

There are many kinds of trenches, but the trenches referred to here are trenches found in war time. During all ages and all wars, there have been trenches. Trenches are dark, dirty, miserable places to be. You must hunker down and keep a watchful eye for the enemy. Bullets, bombs, explosions all around jar you to the bone. They do not seem to be places we want to be.

Sometimes, trenches are just where we need to be. Sometimes being in the trenches gives cover and safety from all the shooting and explosions going on all around us. Sometimes the trenches offer protection. Sometimes being in the trenches is where we learn and grow.

We are all fighting in this same war. Many are casualties, many will survive. It is a war that has been going on since the beginning of time. One day soon, it will end. It has already been won but the end is not yet. Christ won the war and now He is working to save as many of us as He can. He wants us with Him. That is why He died for us.

When we feel ourselves slipping down into the trenches, go ahead and go.  Find protection from all the bad in this world. When we are in the trenches, He is right there with us. All we need to do is allow Him to fight for us. Hold onto Him. He will protect us. He is our shield. He will pull us through. Praise His holy name!
