Throw Out The Old

Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

Colossians 3:9-10 NKJV

A devotion for August 20th through the 26th

Today, while my husband and I cleaned out the freezer, I was thinking about how we often clean out the refrigerator and pantry as well as the freezer to get rid of the old, expired food and make room for new things we buy.  We always seem to clean out the refrigerator before the trash comes.  I feel like this is something everyone tends to do.  It seems there are always things that don’t get eaten that we need to throw out.  As much as I hate wasting food, it still seems to be something that happens each week.

I started thinking about the spoiled food and how it made me think about the parts of us that are spoiled, rotten.  We all have those parts of us that are just plain bad.  They are usually those things we try to push way back and hide so no one sees the rotten side of us.  The spoiled, rotten, bad parts of us are sin.  All those things that we hold onto that end up ruining everything else.

We need to go through and clean out all the bad, expired, sinful things that lurk deep inside each of us.  Throw them out and replace them with God’s word.  Filling ourselves with His word and His love is like throwing out the old and putting on the new, more improved.  After all, filling ourselves with all the negative, rotten, bad, and sin filled things of the world do nothing for us and are only temporary.  Filling ourselves with His word, His love, His grace clothes us with something so beautiful.

Spend time today throwing out the old, rotten, sin filled parts of yourself and welcome in the new, love filled grace that our heavenly Father wants for us.  It will lead to so much that is far better, and longer lasting.  And it will last for eternity.
