Then a woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink’— For His disciples had gone off into the city to buy food— The Samaritan woman asked Him, ‘How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?’ (For Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans.)
A devotion for January 5th through the 11th
I was reading the story of the woman at the well on Sabbath as our pastor preached about this very story. I have read this story many times as well as studying it at various times. There are many stories in the Bible I really enjoy contemplating. This is definitely one of them.
Just imagine being this woman. The period of time this happened was very different from today’s world, and yet this same thing still holds true. The woman belonged to a group of people that Jews would not associate with. Even today, we have groups that do not want to associate with other, specific groups.
This woman was looked down on. She had many husbands and the man she was with at the time of this story was not her husband. She went down to the well at a time of day as to not run into anyone else. She didn’t want anyone to see her. But someone did. It was a “divine appointment”.
There is so much to gain from studying this story, from putting yourself in her place. Imagining what it must have been like. To feel ashamed and want to hide and yet being seen and spoken to by the promised Messiah. To have the One who will save the world meet you where you are with a desire to save you, personally. One who is not worthy being personally reached out to by the only One who is worthy.
Know that God wants a personal relationship with you. A saving relationship. A loving relationship. Accept His love.
