Tame the Fiery Tongue

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

James 3:6 NKJV

Midweek Thoughts

Studying James 3 this week in Bible study brought out good discussions and many thoughts.  James 3:5-12 are powerful verses talking about how we use words.  I urge you to get your Bible and read them.  Spend time pondering over what you read and applying it to your own life.  I know I did.

We have choices to make in every aspect of life, including the words we speak.  At any given moment we are in a position when we are talking to someone, anyone, where the words we speak could have a big impact on the person we are speaking to.  We need to always remember to choose our words wisely.

If we don’t tame our tongue and we speak words that are not nice, mean, and simply tear down another person, this starts a fire, a wound, for the other person that could be so hard to heal.  Our words can have an opposite effect from what we want if we do not choose them wisely.  Our purpose is not to tear others down, but to lift them up.  To direct, educate, share.  These words should always be used to lift others, not tear them down.  We don’t want to push others away, we want to draw them closer to Him.

We should always use words with the correct tone and in the correct way to show His love, His guidance.  When we take the time to use words to lift others up it pulls them closer and closer to Him.  It shows His character.  It shows love.  This is what His intention is for us.  It should be our intention as well.  Sweet words are far more appealing than poisonous ones.  Pray for God to give you sweet words.

Choose your words wisely.  Use words Jesus would use.  Lift others to Him and bring them closer to His glory.
