Surrender

I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him.

Ecclesiastes 3:14 ESV

Midweek thoughts

There is a great hymn called “All To Jesus I Surrender” by Robin Mark.  We sing this at church from time to time and it has recently come to my thoughts more often.  I have been thinking lately about the lyrics “I surrender all”.  Do we really?  Everyone sings this hymn, and the words are powerful, just like so many other hymns that are in the hymnal in the church pew.  But do we really think about the words and what they mean?  Do we really commit to those words?

We are asked to surrender all to God, to Jesus.  So often we hold onto things that we don’t want to surrender to Him.  We feel they are little things or maybe they are things that we enjoy and don’t see the harm in hanging onto them.  Surrendering things means letting them go, giving them up and we don’t want to give up things we enjoy even if they aren’t good for us in the long run.

I’ve spent a lot of time the last few days wondering if there are things I am holding onto that I need to surrender to Him.  I’m not always sure, sometimes none of us are.  We need to go to Him in prayer, ask Him what we are holding onto that we need to let go of.  The important part is actually surrendering it all to Him.

We think we are giving things up, sometimes fun things, enjoyable things, but what we gain when we surrender it all, all to Him, is so much greater than anything we hold onto in this life.  Everything here that we want to hold onto is only temporary, fleeting.  Here today, gone tomorrow so to speak.  But what He offers in return for surrendering it all, is beyond anything we can possibly comprehend.

It isn’t easy but look for the things you are holding onto.  All the things we don’t surrender to Him hold us back from the peace and beauty waiting for us when Jesus returns.  A peace filled heart now followed by an eternity with no sin, no pain, no sadness, just love and peace.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see God’s promises fulfilled when Jesus returns!

Surrender it all to Him now, tomorrow’s promises for eternity are so much greater!
