Preparation Day

Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ” So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it.

Exodus 16:23-24 NKJV

A devotion for July 14th through the 20th

In the Bible, it is mentioned a few times about preparation day.  Per the Bible, preparation day is the day before Sabbath, meaning Friday.  (See Mark 15:42 and Luke 23:54) That is to say, people were directed to prepare everything they could so they would be ready to do nothing but worship on Sabbath.  Food would be gathered, and things prepared so once Sabbath started at sunset minds could be solely focused on God and worshiping Him.

In Exodus, preparation day is also discussed, and, in that story, it shows God’s blessings when they did prepare before Sabbath.  Preparation day is also talked about surrounding Christ’s crucifixion.  In the Gospels, it talks about the desire to prepare bodies before Sabbath began.  This was unable to happen for Christ’s body, so it was carefully put in the tomb waiting for Sabbath to end.

I thought a lot about preparation day yesterday, on Sabbath.  My thoughts went to how God has given direction to “prepare” for Sabbath, but we can take that as an example to prepare for the second coming.  If we think about how we are to prepare on Friday for Sabbath, it is to be ready for Sabbath.  We need to take that same preparation and prepare for the second coming.  The difference is we can’t wait for the day before.  “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Matthew 24:44 NKJV.

How do you prepare for Christ’s second coming?  Study the Bible.  Pray.  Allow the Holy Spirit to change your heart.  Give your heart to Him.

Prepare.  You never know the day He will come again.  We all need to be ready.
