Looking into the Face of Jesus

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Matthew 25:40 NKJV

A devotion for January 29th through February 4th

Last night our church did its monthly “Day of Service”.  We go once a month and volunteer to serve a meal to homeless and low-income individuals.  We enjoy this time doing God’s work and bringing His light to others.  Last night something happened that really drove home something to me.  There was a couple who came for a meal.  One of our volunteers visited with them as we always have people out amongst the individuals talking with them and offering to help in any way we can.  During the conversation it came up that the young woman needed to be seen by a doctor.

We offered to drive the young woman to the ER as we knew where it was located.  The other volunteer offered to take the woman’s significant other back to their camp.  I noticed that the man looked familiar to me somehow but brushed it off.  During the visit at the ER, I stayed with the young woman.  She was a bit nervous and scared.  I also noted that she appeared to look familiar to me as well but brushed it off.  It was confirmed that she was 5 months pregnant with a little boy and had an infection that needed treated.

The nurse practitioner who assisted her made sure to find her a shelter as she refused to discharge the young woman back to the streets with the temperature being dangerously low.  I offered to take her to the shelter and proceeded to call to see if there was a place for her significant other on the men’s side.  I told the medical people my husband and I would take them both to the shelter, and we did.

Thinking about this whole situation over and over again and how they appeared familiar to me somehow, I realized something.  I realized I had looked into the face of Jesus when looking at both.  I began thinking about Matthew 25:34-46.  I realized what we did for this couple and their unborn child, we did for Jesus.  We didn’t think about it at the time, but we did just what Jesus wanted us to do.

Take a moment to read the referenced verses.  Remember when you are serving others, in whatever capacity you do, you are serving Him.  See His face in theirs.
