Laundry List

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

A devotion for July 6th through the 12th

The term “laundry list” originally was used to refer to a list of garments taken to a laundromat. The list was used to ensure the right amount was paid and the correct items were returned. Since that time the term has evolved to mean any exhaustive list of things that need to be done or completed. The last few months I feel like I have been lost in an ever-growing laundry list that just wouldn’t end.

Often, we all end up with lists that just keep growing with not much getting marked off as done. Our lives become crazy busy with twists and turns we don’t expect. I know this has happened to me starting the end of last year. So many things happened at one time creating lots of things on my to do list and putting more and more pressure on me. It has caused me to feel exhausted most of the time and to stop, or have difficulty, with writing devotions. It has also caused me to struggle with so many things.

I know He is with me. I know all the things I need to do. I understand about depression, stress, and having way too much on your plate. I know there are steps I can take to make it better but ultimately I also know there is nothing I can do to help the situation. Only He has that ability. I have to hold onto my faith, turn to Him, and trust. That is something that is hard for us mere humans. That’s when we need to remember, we are just human.

As humans, we truly can’t get through this life in this world on our own. I know lots of people think that is just what they have to do but in truth, we can’t. We need Him. He is the only one that can see us through. He doesn’t just magically make everything better or to work out perfectly. He doesn’t promise anywhere to do that, not in this life anyway. He does promise to be right there by us, seeing us through, giving us strength. He will sustain us through good and bad times. He will prepare us to have perfection only with Jesus, only at Jesus’ second coming.

So, while my laundry list has gotten a little less full and I’ve been able to mark off a few things I will hold onto Him and continue to ask Him to sustain me. He gifts us one day a week to help us be rejuvenated. I cherish that gift and made the most of it this weekend. He has given me His peace and prepared me to go forth into another week. He has reminded me I will always need Him. Thank you, Lord, for being beside me through it all.
