Instant Gratification

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 NKJV

A devotion for March 10th through the 16th

I was chatting with a friend at church yesterday and suddenly we found ourselves talking about how this world has become one of “instant gratification”.  I’ve been thinking about that a lot.  I feel it’s very sad the ways that we let the world pull at us and distract us, all because of our need for instant gratification.

Even from an early age these days there is that draw toward instantly being satisfied, in some way.  We have small children who can’t seem to go even a minute without something playing out on a handheld device.  We as adults just can’t seem to wait for anything.  “File your taxes and get your refund now!” “Buy now, pay later!” That’s just a couple of slogans and sayings.  There are so many more that we hear every day!  The sad thing is we often do not think through what the consequences could be.

In this world of “get it now” we need to learn how to slow down and be patient.  That is a hard thing for most people.  Everyone wants everything right now.  The funny thing is the only thing I want right now is Jesus to return.  I have to wait for that too.  But the nice thing about waiting for Jesus to return is that when He does, that will be the greatest “gratification” ever!

While we wait, let’s spend time building our relationship with our Heavenly Father.  Let’s spend time investing in the only true future there is.  Pray, study, contemplate every word from God.  The more we do this the more we see His word is the only truth.  We will also see that the signs are there, He’s coming!

Praise His Holy name for one day He will return and what rejoicing there will be.
