He’s Watching

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

Proverbs 15:3 NIV

A devotion for January 7th through the 13th

There is a quote that I have heard many times, sometimes with slightly different verbiage.  I like this quote and lately have been thinking a lot about it because I hear something as I read it that goes beyond the end.  Many times, this quote is attributed to C.S. Lewis, but it first appeared in a book by motivational speaker Charles Marshall, Shattering the Glass Slipper.  The quote goes like this: "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is looking".  I have spent a lot of time thinking about this quote as well as the various versions I have also seen.  It speaks to me, and I agree with it, to a point.

I agree, we should always do the right thing.  Many times, the right thing is not what we want to do but it is the right thing to do.  Integrity is something I try to hold onto and utilize in all aspects of my life.  It doesn’t matter to me if anyone is watching or not, I want to do the right thing.  I have realized though there is something I would add.  You see, even when we think no one is watching someone is.

We often do things, good and bad, where we think we have gotten away with something because no one was around, no one “saw” us.  But if you really think about it someone is always watching.  Who is that someone?  God.

God is always watching.  He sees everything we do.  No matter if we are trying to do something without anyone knowing, He knows.  He sees all.  We can’t hide anything from Him, no matter how hard we try.  No one on this earth, no mere human, might see what we are doing but God does see.  He is always watching.  And He is our final judge.

Be led by integrity.  Choose to do the right thing every time.  Follow His guidance and know that whether you choose to do the wrong thing or stand with integrity, He is watching.
