Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.
How often do you move forward with a whole-hearted effort to help someone in need without thinking about how it may benefit you? It’s important when we help others to not think about ourselves. This happened Saturday night and I was able to see this bible verse come to life.
It was cold on Saturday. We arrived to volunteer at a local homeless shelter that was having a special event where families in need could come pick out toys and gifts for their children. When we arrived, we heard someone telling the person in charge that there was a car with the keys locked inside. They attended to the people, and we went to work. Two hours later, as we were leaving after the event ended, we came across the car, with two young men desperately trying to get the door unlocked with a hanger. They had been at it for two hours in the cold!
My husband jumped in to help. We had three young people with us that I tried to get in the car to get warm. After I started the car and got the two girls situated, I went back out to see what I could do. The sun was setting, and it was quickly getting colder. I pulled my husband aside and said, “let me call someone to come unlock the car and I will pay for it, it’s getting cold and dark”. My husband gave me the go ahead while he continued to help.
I got someone who said they would be there within the hour. I told the people what was going on and said we needed to drop the one youth, the boy who was also helping, off at home and would be back in 15 minutes. We left, dropped off the young boy, and went right back. When we got back, one of the young men came up and said they got the door unlocked and the keys out. I made sure they did not need gas money and we all went our separate ways.
I called the locksmith, told them we no longer needed them, and hung up the phone. I was hit with a reality that God had stepped in. I was willing to help this stranger no matter the cost, no matter what it meant for us. I had never thought about it, I just wanted to help get everyone out of the cold. God stepped in and made sure they got into their car, got warm, and I did not have to pay any money to get help. God works in wonderful ways!
When we turn it all over to Him, and step out in faith to help another, God takes care of all! God helped those people in no time at all and made sure I did not have to be out any money. God took care of us all when we just stepped out in faith to do what God would want us to do, without question. Praise God for His goodness and His timing!
