Habits

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 NKJV

A devotion for May 26th through June 1st

Recently I finished listening to an audio book titled “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg.  It’s a very good book and I recommend it.  It talks a lot about the science behind habits and how to potentially change habits.  It was very interesting, and I had not thought about the fact that everything we do can boil down to a habit.  Once we start something and it becomes a habit it can become so automatic we don’t realize it’s become a habit.

There were various things talked about such as studies of people with habits such as smoking and people wanting to lose weight.  There were many stories about companies and the things they learned and do that create habits for people.  They learn about the habits people have and how to use them to their advantage.  It was very eye opening.

All the various stories shared in the book made me think of how the devil works.  The devil takes advantage of our habits.  He slips in subliminal messages in such a subtle way we don’t even realize his influence.  It starts slowly and grows and grows.  Before we know it, we have a new habit, and it isn’t a good one.  A statement made in the book backs this up, “we are what we repeatedly do”.

If we spend our time doing things that take us away from God, we begin to lose sight of Him and we become what we are doing, sin.  We need to identify the things that are influencing our habits, turn away from them and toward Him.  We need to purposefully put Him first.  The more we put Him first the better our relationship will become and the better our habits.

Put the right cue in front of you, seek Him, and the reward will be an eternity of peace free of sin, free of all the bad habits we struggle with in this world.  Trust Him.  Have faith.  He is coming again!
