Empty Tank

to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:19 NKJV

A devotion for November 12th through the 18th

Do you ever feel like you have nothing left?  Recently, I have been feeling empty.  I have been feeling like my tank is empty and I have nothing more to give.  I still want to do whatever I can to make sure things are done and everyone is doing well, but I have felt like I don’t have anything to give.  We often give and give to others, but we also need to be filled ourselves to keep giving.  These feelings have had me fighting a battle inside between being selfish and other-centered.  Trying to find that balance has been hard.  Then I listened to a sermon and took a walk.

The sermon talked about our need for the Holy Spirit and how we should be praying and asking God to fill us with the Holy Spirit daily.  These words kept going over and over in my mind.  Then I went for a walk to think.  The whole time I walked I was talking to God.  I thought about so many things, so many situations, and about how I want to be like Jesus and be more other-centered rather than selfish.  Thinking about all these things I realized, it’s okay to ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit because then we can give more to others.

We can’t do it on our own.  When we try our tanks become empty.  We stall out and have no more to give.  We need to be filled and the best thing to be filled with is the Holy Spirit!  We need His strength and wisdom to move through each day and each situation.  He fills us if we ask.  We must allow Him to fill us.  It’s important to pray for others but it is just as important to ask God to fill us.  We are no good to anyone if our tanks are empty. We must ask daily.

I felt so much better after meditating over the sermon, walking, and especially spending that time talking with Him.  I felt Him filling me.  I now feel like I have more to give, and I don’t feel so empty anymore.

Pray for others and pray for yourself.  Ask God daily to fill you with the Holy Spirit.  Daily.  Allow Him to fill your tank.  He will fill it to overflowing!
