Depend on Him

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;

Proverbs 3:5 NKJV

A devotion for August 14th through the 20th

Scrolling through Facebook the other day I saw a post someone shared that said “I was raised to depend on myself” with Soul Whispers under it.  As soon as I saw this, I thought to myself “that needs followed up with something even more meaningful”.  So, I commented, then did my own picture that said, “I was raised to depend on myself, I learned to depend on God”.  This to me is so much more important.  I have since thought so much about this.

We as sinful humans, think we need to depend on ourselves.  Everyone around us seems to be against us and so many times people fail us.  We feel like there is no one we can depend on, no one that is there for us in times of trouble.  We end up feeling all alone.  As parents, we teach our children to depend on themselves because we feel this sense of not being able to depend on anyone.  As children, we grow up seeing we cannot depend on anyone else.  It’s a vicious cycle.

What we hopefully learn, I know I did, was that we don’t have to depend on ourselves.  We are flawed.  But there is One who is right there with us, even when we don’t realize or know it.  He is always there, waiting for us to turn to Him, to depend on Him.  Once we realize we are not alone, we don’t have to depend on ourselves, we are freed.

God is always with us, and we can depend on Him.  His love is always there for us to hold onto.  He wants to sustain us; He wants us to rely on Him and turn towards Him.  He wants us with Him and for us to freely love Him in return.  “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!’” Luke 11:13 NKJV

When you feel like you are all alone, turn to God.  He is right there with you, quietly holding you.  We are never alone.  Depend on Him.
