Character

For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.

Luke 8:17 NKJV

Midweek thoughts

While doing our Sabbath School lesson for yesterday, there was a question posed at the end of the lesson. “It has been said that ‘character is what a person is in the dark.’  What sort of person are you when no one is looking? What does the answer tell you about the changes that you need to make?”  These are good questions to ponder, and we should, but they can also bring to mind things we don’t want to admit to.

Do we do things simply to be noticed? Many people show videos on TikTok of themselves doing good deeds, helping the less fortunate, doing some kind of nice things such as buying someone a meal, paying for the car behind them in the drive thru, or donating time or money to a cause.  These are all good things we should all be doing; however, they should not be done in order to be noticed.

If we are doing things to be “seen,” making sure someone knows about what we have done or capitalizing on it in our latest TikTok, then our hearts are not in it. Honest good deeds are to be done when no one is looking.  They should be done simply, quietly, without being documented for the world to see. When we do our good deeds in the public eye, we are doing it for the wrong reasons and just to be noticed by others in the world.

It also makes a difference in what we put into our minds. If we fill our minds with bad images, bad visuals, negative words, it feeds the bad and negative thoughts. We become more and more accustomed to the wrong things which can affect our hearts, minds, and actions.  When we stop filling our minds with negative, and intentionally choose to fill our minds with good, positive things, then it has a positive affect on our minds, hearts, and actions. Filling our minds with God’s love has a profound affect on our hearts, lives, and character.

Take some time to read Matthew 25:31-46 and then spend some time pondering the above question. What comes to mind about your character then?

And always remember, God knows and sees all things. Nothing is hidden from Him.
