And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
This time of year, there are so many carols being played or sung everywhere you go. Most of the songs are beautiful, with lyrics telling of the birth of Jesus, such as the song “Away in a Manger”. I love the music because it speaks of Jesus, our Savior, and love. The message is so powerful.
Away in a manger, a savior is born. The light of the world. This small baby, dependent on Mary and Joseph to care for Him. So vulnerable to the evils surrounding Him. Born to die for each of us, taking our sins.
I know Jesus was not born on December 25th; we all know it isn’t His real birthday. But thinking about His birth, really thinking about all of it, amazes me even now. He knew from before God breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils, before the earth was formed, He knew. He knew He would humble Himself to be born a little babe. No fanfare, no glorious upbringing, no room in an inn, just a small baby wrapped in swaddling clothes. A humble life. Only to be beaten, spit at, cursed at, whipped, a crown of thorns thrust onto His head and hung on a cross. He knew and He did it anyway.
He did it for you, for me, for all of us, long before we were even a gleam in our mother’s eye. He planned it all. Why? Because of His love for each of us. His desire to save us and have us with Him for eternity. His love is far greater than anything we can possibly imagine.
Not just at Christmas, but every day, we should praise His Holy name! Make room for Him in your heart. Praise God for our Savior!
