Allowing God

So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

Genesis 16:2 NKJV

A devotion for July 4th through the 10th

God always has a plan for us.  His plan is always good and meant to glorify Him.  Often though, we tend to think we know what is best and we try to do things to “help” God’s plan.  We don’t show our faith and trust in the Lord, instead we feel we need to do something to help things along.  Make things work out.  Well, this never works out.

When God sets forth with a plan, it will happen no matter what we say or do.  Sometimes we try to rush things or make things happen and things just turn out wrong.  This happened in the story of Abram being promised a son.  His wife, Sarai, tried to make things happen by offering her maidservant, Hagar, to Abram.  This did not work out well but God knew how to make it right, and He did.  Ultimately, when God spoke to Hagar, she listened to what He told her to do, and so did Abram.  And so, Ishmael was born.

It’s a short story in the Bible filled with so many lessons.  We need to trust God and not try to make things happen.  We need to remember; we are not alone.  God is there with us.  He is working for our good as well as the good of His plan.  If we put our trust in Him that He will take care of the situation and listen for His direction, and follow it, things will work out for the better.

Pray and listen for God’s direction.  Know that God will open a door if it is meant to be open.  He will also close doors that are not meant to be open.  We as humans make a mess of everything but God is at work.  He wants us to repent and follow Him.  Trust in Him, have faith.  God really does know best and can work out the situation if we allow Him to.
