A Penny

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Luke 12:7 NKJV

Midweek thoughts

Last Friday I found a penny on the floorboard of the car when I got in. Then on Saturday I found one by the loveseat in the living room. Then at church later that morning, I found another penny, dropped by one of the children collecting lambs offering. The first two I put in our change jug and the third I returned to the lambs offering baskets. Finding each of these pennies, I began to think about what message God was trying to give me. I figured it out yesterday afternoon.

A penny is seen as worthless, insignificant. We always think “what can you get with a penny?” so why pick one up that we find? What difference is a penny going to make? I have always picked up pennies if I find them and put them in our jug. I never think much about it, but I do it. Then, yesterday, I had a meeting at work. I do not like large groups and really do not like talking in large groups. I feel like I am insignificant, worthless, have nothing worthy to share. The pennies I found came to mind.

Put on each penny are the words “In God we Trust.”  We need to remember those words. God has made a covenant with us, a promise. Part of that covenant was sending Jesus to be our sacrificial lamb. Jesus died on that cross for each of us, to save us, so we could live with Him in eternity. Jesus took on our sins, paid a huge price that we deserved, and he did not. Jesus, the innocent lamb, took on the sins of all of us and paid the price we should have paid. Jesus thought we were worthy. Jesus thinks we are significant, important. This shows so much of the love God has for each of us.

God says we are worthy. God says we are important. We need to remember we are loved and wanted by God. We need to trust God’s promise. So, the next time you see a penny laying on the ground, pick it up. Look closely at it and read the words “In God we Trust.”  Trust in God. Trust His word. Trust His promise. Trust that to Him, we are all worthy!
