To Love God

A devotional for November 1st through the 7th

What does it mean to love God?  Have you really thought about this?  Many people think that by saying they love God and that they accept Jesus as their savior that it means they love God.  They don't go any farther than that.  Their mouths speak the words and then they go back to doing whatever they want to do.  Loving God should mean so much more to each and every one of us and not just words we say.  Loving God means showing Him we love Him.

As with any relationship, and you should have a relationship with God, the other person knows you love them by your actions, not just the things you say.  Many people quote the Bible verse Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" KJV.  They use this verse to say they know they are saved by grace and don't need to do works because it says so in the Bible.  Yes, it is true, we are saved by grace.  However, the way God knows we love Him is by the works we do.  If you love God then wouldn't you want to do works, follow His commandments, follow His word?  What better way to show God you love Him then by following His word.

There are so many ways that you can, and should, show your love for God.  Start by loving your fellow man.  Buy a meal for a stranger.  Donate your time to help others.  Hugging a friend who is hurting.  Simple things like making sure your trash ends up in the trash can instead of along the side of the road.  Helping around the house without being asked just because it's the right thing to do.  Showing love to others by helping and doing things for them no only shows them God but it shows God that you love Him.

By doing works we show others God and His love and at the same time we are showing God that we love Him and want to serve Him.  By grace we are saved.  By works we show others, and God, that we love them.

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:15 KJV
